STUMPTOWN ART STUDIO--Dia de los Muertos - October 6 Reception

Dia de los Muertos, translated as "Day of the Dead", is a multi-day festival in Mexico honoring departed ancestors, friends and family. There are journeys to cemeteries to spruce up neglected gravesites, lively marketplaces selling beads, candies in the shapes of skeletons, and family altars lovingly assembled.

Stumptown Art Studio will be decorated in festive Mexican style for an art exhibit that will capture the essence and spirit of Dia de los Muertos. The exhibition features the artwork of high school and junior high school art students from around the Valley.

Mexican culture honors its dead during this traditional holiday every year. Add this to your list of "Hallowed" activities and get your fill of culture along with fun on Thursday, October 6 from 6-9 p.m. during the Whitefish First Thursday Gallery Night. This evening is for the entire family and all ages are encouraged to attend.

Stumptown Art Studio is a non-profit community art center in the heart of Whitefish, Montana. It was founded in 1995 to offer art opportunities for all ages and art interests including: classes, workshops, art camps, art parties, a clay cooperative, pottery painting, glass fusing and mosaic-making in the Ceramics Annex, , art gifts, retail art supplies and exhibits.

Chrystal Higgins - October - The Purple Pomegranate

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Whitefish basket maker, Chrystal Higgins during the month of October. Chrystal took her first basket weaving class in 1997, instantly became hooked, and started teaching others how to weave in 1999. Chrystal specializes in unique gourd and contemporary baskets, as well as antler baskets, a great deal of which is special order consignment baskets. Always striving to expand her knowledge, she constantly experiments with new materials and techniques, in a multitude of basket forms.

Chrystal's original basket designs have been awarded numerous Best of Show awards, as well as winning several local, state and national awards. Partly because she always sneaks in lots of tips and techniques during class time and strives to make basketmaking a fun and stress-free time for all of her students, Chrystal has been given the nickname of "Montana Wild Woman" by her basket-weaving buddies and students.

Meet Chrystal during Whitefish Gallery Night, Thursday, October 6th, 2011 from 6-9 PM. Chrystal’s work will be displayed during the opening and throughout the month of October.

Born in Hartford, Ct. 1964. Jeff grew up with a love for fishing the outdoors and art. He attended Howell Cheney Techinical School in Manschester Ct., where he started his training as a machinist and toolmaker. Working in the trade for over 20 years Jeff pursued painting whenever he could, taking classes in painting from artist Beth Ellis, Jim Wilcox, Luke Frazier and Dave Wade. Along with study through many art books and painting on location.

In 2005, Jeff moved to the Flathead Valley in Montana to be closer to the wildlife, mountains and the western art world.

Jeff has participated in the 2003 "top 200" arts for the parks, the 2007/2009
Charlie Russell auction, The 2007
Bozeman Western Art Auction. The miniature auction at the Hockaday Museum, the annual 2003 plien aire paint out with the Hockaday Museum and the saddle up paint event with the Bigfork Museum of Art and History.

Stephen Isley Presents the Art Work of Colt Idol, Thursday, September 1st from 6 PM to 9 PM.

This talented young artist, born and raised in the Flathead Valley, graduated from Whitefish High School in 2009. He studied and worked with his father, Dick Idol, who is a well-known sculptor and painter. Colt is currently attending Montana State University Art School in Bozeman.

Colt's oil paintings, on cotton and linen canvas, clearly show a natural sense of color and visual perception. Please join us for this Thursday's Gallery Night event to meet Colt and view his work.

Two artists are being featured for the September exhibition line-up at Stumptown Art Studio. The opening reception for Beads of the Art and Bare Spirits takes place on Thursday, September 1 from 6-9 p.m.

In Beads of the Art, jewelry artist Traci Staves translates her passion using seed beads and other mediums into works of art. "There is something so powerful about these tiny little objects," says Staves. "Their magic is spellbinding and it can take total controal of one's mind and soul. Ask any serious beadher and they will tell you it is a passion, an addiction, an obsession." She explains how she utilizes the three months of glorious inspiration all around to fuel her creative spirit for the next nine months of winter. Matthew Springer's Bare Spirits capture many of the activities and landscapes that inspire him by living in this corner of Montana. "There is something majestic in big mountainous silhouettes when the graduated layers slip into one another and the world becomes a vaguery of two-dimensional color," he says. "Black into blue. Yellow slipping behing a curtain. It is happy hour at its finest and the extended twilight periods in the Flathead are one of the reasons I love being here." To capture the spiritual rise of these moments, Springer has paired this series with depictions os "Raven" to encapsulate the appropriate energy of his artwork.

This month Ethos is showcasing two artists ~ David Nielsen & Joseph Pesina.

Ceramic Artist Joseph Pesina is originally from Door County, Wisconsin (the "thumb" of the state!) Through the medium of Clay and Fire Joseph expresses what he sees and feels in nature. Pesina began his professional career in Wisconsin at the Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek. In 2009-2010 Joseph was the Artist in Residence at the Clay Studio of Missoula, he was also invited to and completed a Residency at The Pottery Workshop in Jindezhen, China in 2008. Along with his creative endevours, Joseph has also worked as a production potter for over 10 years in both Wisconsin and Montana. Joseph now lives, works and studies in Whitefish, Montana with his wife, Astrid.

David Nielsen is an abstract painter whose depictions of everyday scenes are cast through abstract eyes, giving his work a unique perspective and originality. David is a gratuate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. He is the receipent of the Mid-venture Award and was also given the opportunity to further his education, studying in Hamburg, Germany on a scholarship through Foreign Cultural Studies. In 2002, Nielsen was selected into the Peninsula Art School Emerging Artist Program in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, where he and Pesina worked together for the first time. David and his wife Laura currently call Madison, Wisconsin home.

September - Lisa Rideout - Horseshoe Nail Jewelry

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Whitefish jewelry artist, Lisa Rideout during the month of September. Searching for a change of lifestyle for she and her son, Lisa Rideout decide to move from her home in Kansas City, Missouri, to Montana about eight years ago. As she readied herself for this huge change, her cousin gave her a cross made out of horseshoe nails to hang on the car’s rearview mirror. It became the symbol of family, strength and hope for their new life as they came across country, through the Rockies to the Flathead Valley. That trip was a long one and the horseshoe nails that dangled from the mirror became a great source of inspiration to her as she found a new home and settled in Whitefish.

One day, about five years ago, she discovered a box of rusty horseshoe nails in a friends barn sale and she snapped them up in a second—establishing the first inventory for RideOut’s HideOut, the name of Lisa’s creative business. She made gifts for family and friends from the horseshoe nails, and then moved on to selling necklace designs with the other jewelry she created as a hobby. Today, Lisa’s wearable art has grown from men and women’s neckware, to bracelets, to children’s necklaces and accessories. Each horseshoe nail is hand-crafted to fit a specific design in her product line, with the more elaborate pieces including colored wiring and crystals for that extra bit of bling we all love to show off once in a while! Her designs continue to evolve and change as customers repeat her visits and as new people discover her work.

Thursday August 4th Going To The Sun Gallery Presents Nick Oberling and Jennifer Li for galery nights

Nick Oberling Montana's landscape painter has been exhibited at the C. M. Russell Museum and is in the permanent collection of the Hockaday Museum of Art. He is a founding member of the Montana Painters Alliance. He has been a selected Quick Draw artist and participant at the C. M. Russell Museum's Auction of Western Art and the Montana Land Reliance and Treasure State Art Auctions. He has been Artist in Residence at Glacier National Park and the Helena National Forest. Nicholas Oberling was educated at Cornell University and studied painting under the atelier system at The Art Students League of New York for a decade. His biography is included in Who's Who in America.

Jennifer Li studied painting for twelve years at the Art Students League of New York under distinguished realist painters Harvey Dinnerstein and Frank Mason. She has been painting professionally since 1990.

The New York Times has described Jennifer Li's work as "straightforwardly beautiful" with an "an element of the weird". Her work has been noted for its imaginative and evocative content and for the high quality of her technique.

Her work has been featured at the Holter Museum in Helena, Montana, the John Pence Gallery in San Francisco, the Union League Club in New York, and the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell, Montana.

The exceptional photographs of John Ashley will be featured at Stumptown Art Studio from August 4 through August 30, 2011. Curious by Nature combines two of Ashley's passions--photography and conservation--in the form of fine art photography. His images remind you of the natural beauty and humor of wild places and wild critters.

Ashley earned a biology degree from the University of Montana, and became an award-winning photojournalist at newspapers in Florida and Montana. By 1982, he was ranked by the National Press Photographers' Association as one of the top three photojournalists in the Southeastern United States. Along his path, John worked as a biologist for many years--mostly with the National Park Service--working to conserve California Condors, Bald Eagles and his favorite, Harlequin Ducks.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring works by three Flathead Valley fiber artist during the month of August. Carole Moseley, Sally Kimmel Glutting and Becky Pallies-Jacobsen will have a group show entitled 'From the Fields'.

Carole feels that nature is a marvelous evolution with its beauty, surrounding us with every shape and color imaginable. She feels her pieces are a learning process, what makes her happy and what are pleasing to the eye. Different techniques are used to make this happen. Fibers of many types are the source of Carole's process. She especially enjoys using natural fiber for her base design and then using man made fibers for detail. She uses a combination of stitching, beading and computer generated fibers, different techniques to add texture and details.

Sally's interpretation of the theme was to think about green. To think about the meanings of green, the heart chakra, color of hope and renewal. Sally talks about her work "I like to create pieces that make me smile; pieces that invitee you to look closer, read the little messages and enjoy the details. These pieces are inspired by nature, labyrinths, social awareness, and of course, humor. I like to experiment with texture. Techniques include use of fiber, beads, wire and photography as well as fabric to capture ideas."

Becky considered "From the Fields" which set her mind to wandering through fields of flowers, berries, oil and ice and finally led her to a central theme of "contrast." She found her contrast in both color and texture. Experimenting with different techniques this year has encouraged the pieces that Becky will be sharing in the show.

Please join us Thursday, July 7th, 6-9PM for an exhibit with Montana Sculptor, Rink Davis. "A Celebration of Life" will be featuring ceramics & bronzes from 1960s-present work. Come meet the artist, enjoy fine art, refreshments & music!!

Rink Davis was raised in Portland, Oregon. At the age of 13 he moved to a ranch on the Montana/Wyoming state line. The self-taught artist was sculpting by the age of 20. At the urging of a college art professor, he kept at it. He began to enter juried shows, capturing Best of Sculpture and Best of Show awards. He turned pro in hes early 30's and shortly thereafter was offered the opportunity to study at the American Academy of Rome. But with a wife and three children, he decided against it. The rewards still cam. Concentrating on what surrounded him, the environment and Indian culture, he continued to sculpt. He was included in the first "Crafts of America" show at the Baltimore Museum of Arts. His works are now in corporate and private collections. Presently , his work can be seen at 103 Rolling Green Place, Missoula, Montana or The Walking Man Frame Shop & Gallery in Whitefish, Montana.

"Some critics have described art as the highest level of expression of an age. My inspiration comes through my belief in the reverence for life given to us by our creator, finding its fullest expression in love for one another and its fulfillment in the family. The thread of love that weaves itself through these relationships is what I try to capture. My intuitive nature is captured in the medium that I work in, whether it be clay, wood, welded steel or bronze. I have gone from a figurative expression to total abstraction and then back to the figurative using the chosen medium to dictate the symbols or shapes and their relationship to each other to make unusual creations. In 55 years of sculpting, I have chosen to communication my vision of life with all its changing complexities and subtleties as a celebration of where I live and learn."

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Whitefish photographer, Jerry Meislik during the month of July. Jerry is an avid photographer who has been pursuing his passion for imaging for nearly fifty years. For many years, he shot with film cameras but recently has transitioned to digital photography. He loves the artistic control and freedom offered by processing the images himself.

Jerry's photographic interests include nature, wildlife, scenic photos and abstracts. He is particularly fascinated with patterns, textures, light, visual puzzles and abstractions. Living in Montana, he is captivated with the ever continuing changes in light, color and climate offered by the landscape. Jerry also loves getting down on the ground and photographing animals and children at their level and from unusual angles. Many of Jerry's images seize the fleeting moment that is often missed with the naked eye but captured in images.

Jerry's other interests include bonsais and he is a published author of books and articles about bonsai. He is a semi-retired Ophthalmologist and enjoys hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and computers.

Stephen Isley Jewelry

Stephen Isley will feature the work of Pat Branting at the Whitefish Gallery Night on Thursday, July 7, 2011 from 6PM to 9PM.

Pat grew up loving the outdoors in North Platt, Nebraska. Graduating from the University of Nebraska, she earned a BA in education and an art minor. In 1976 she moved to Bozeman, Montana where she continued to paint and be inspired by the mountains, lakes and rivers. The wildlife present in these settings influences much of her work. Retired from a teaching career of 34 years, she now has more time to paint.

This painting, entitled "Last Light on the River", is oil on canvas 36" X 24" and is available at the gallery.

Pat is passionate about the study of light and the intriguing shapes and patterns created by light. She says light is the key ingredient for each subject, from nature's little treasures to majestic mountain scenes.

Then, for one night and one night only on July 7, the Fish Frenzy concludes by means of a silent auction. The opening reception accompanied by refreshments begins at 6 p.m. Bidding will continue throughout that evening and finish in a frenzy at 9:30 p.m.

Upon deciding to retire from a career as an Art Director in Minneapolis, Deb sought just the right environment for pursuing her own art. She found Whitefish, Montana and it was love! Deb settled in, Projectmyplace.com was born and she started the first installment of drawings called Project Whitefish. These drawings are a visual narrative of what Deb feels makes a place a home. Deb has drawn the iconic buildings of Whitefish such as Nelson's Hardware, the Presbyterian Church, Montana Coffee Traders, The Buffalo Cafe, Third Street Market and City Hall.

Many of the places in Deb's collection have undergone iterations of looks and even functions in their lifetimes. You will discover some of them have even changed since she drew them! But one thing remains constant, the comfortable hometown feeling that is indelibly book-marked in Deb's soul.

Raffia and Seeds from Madagascar

Our raffia initiative in Madagascar is our oldest partnership, established in 2002 with a cooperative of local women artisans. Ethos also helped train the local marginalized women to fabricate original accessories such as hats, bags and necklaces that are exclusive to the Ethos line. Today our Fair Trade partner is thriving in Madagascar and pays its artisans 50% higher than the local rate for their work.

Natural Sustainable Resource
The raffia palm (Raphia farinifera or R. ruffia) grows to 60ft and is a sustainable organic resource that grows in abundance in Madagascar. The enormous leaves of the palm are composed of 80 to 100 leaflets, which are peeled from either side of the palm fronds then hung out in the sun. Once dry, they are collected and sorted into different classifications, pressed and dyed. The finished raffia is not only soft, pliable and strong but is also non-shrinking. This natural fibre also offers excellent colourability.

Jodi's passion for painting was unearthed while she was designing a Touch of Tuscany room in her home and wanted a fresco painted. That room project began a journey into a painting emphasis on the exploration of anything Italian, with special attention paid to the Tuscan region and the colors it brings to life. This wonderful, creative world of oil on canvas and oil on textured board allows you to use her art to stay connected to the feelings, tastes, and rich colors of the region in your in your everyday life. Being married to an Irishman from Butte Montana, her body of work adds a bit of Irish and Celtic tradition. Rosella Mosteller - MAY - Stumptown Art Studio "Reading Between the Lines"

Stumptown Art Studio is pleased to be featuring its original founder, Rosella Mosteller, in the photographic exhibition: Reading Between the Lines. A resident of Whitefish, Montana for 31 years, Rosella Mosteller has been involved in the arts since the beginning. She started photographing seriously in 1995. At that time, she was intrigued by the emotional content of Parisian cemeteries and later, how that translated into a multi-media work of art. Years and education have taken her down the photographic path to focus on black and white fine art landscape imagery.

In Reading Between the Lines, she presents her traditional and abstract visual perspective with photographs. This exhibition is part of completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where she was awarded a summer portfolio grant in 2007. Other awards she earned include a Talbots Scholarship in 2007 and a merit scholarship from 1999-2001 at the Art Institute in Chicago. Over the past 10 years, her photographs have been juried into annual exhibitions at the Hockaday Museum of Art.

"I think of my abstract landscape photography as part of the whole," Mosteller says. "It is another way to view the traditional. So in that way my traditional landscape and abstract landscape photography connect." Reading Between the Lines Combines the overall with the introspective, the traditional with the abstract and demonstrates how they both mutually exist.

Rick Kom - May - The Purple Pomegranate

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Kalispell artist, Rick Kom during the month of May. Rick learned to draw from his father at an early age. Growing up in northern Idaho, he learned to love its abundant wildlife and natural beauty. He now lives minutes from Glacier National Park with his wife, Shannon, and their two dogs, Koko and Ollie. A self-taught artist, Rick developed a technique in watercolors, clayboard, acrylics, and colored pencil that captures in deepest detail the eyes, fur, and feathers of his beloved animal subjects.

Rick is passionate about meticulously detailed wildlife art. His unique clayboard technique is quite similar to scrimshaw on ivory. Nothing but a sewing needle is used to intricately etch a black India ink surface revealing a layer of white Kaolin clay underneath. Opaque watercolors are then gently brushed into the exposed clay lines, giving his animal subjects a life like appearance.

Kalispel Art Casting is currently one of the largest art casting foundries in the west, employing over 45 people. The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Wendy Orr during the month of October. Wendy has been offering graphics and photography services to clients nationwide for more than 25 years. Her art career has taken many twists and turns from the time she began providing graphics services in San Bernardino, CA, her home town, more than 20 years ago. While keeping up with ever-changing technologies and the location transfers required for her husband’s profession, Orr raised five children, all the while feeding her entrepreneurial spirit at her company Porr Boy Graphics, which began in 1990. There soon followed a position as a graphics instructor at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA in the late 1990s. In 2005, just after moving to the Flathead Valley, she began an additional business, Fairytale Photography, which continues to flourish with offers of fanciful images and photo settings for children.

In both her design and photography businesses, Wendy works with the human face, altering and improving upon it. Now a graphic design and photography instructor at Flathead Valley Community College, Orr became interested in ceramics when she encountered the face jugs made by David Smith, a Ceramics Instructor at the college. With David as her mentor, Wendy discovered that working with clay provided relief from her daily job of perfecting photo images for the advertising industry. Ceramics is hands on and has allowed her to explore the asymmetry that makes faces quirky and interesting. Each of her unique pieces of art is ready to amuse and delight those who appreciate the lighthearted approach she takes in her new medium. She welcomes you to enjoy her new art adventure, Mud in Montana.

" I've been producing my art since my college days in the late '60's and graduate school in the early '70's. My work years include 22 years teaching art full-time not to mention years of other career diversions.

My style and choice of materials is always changing even in a given week. My favorite mediums are watercolor and acrylic painting or drawings using colored pencil or ink. My inspiration comes mainly from nature or natural objects. Often the visual image is solved in my mind during awakened moments in the middle of the night.

Currently, I manage the "Performing Arts Center" for the Whitefish School District. If you have questions or would like to visit my studio, please give me a call at 862-3528.

The best way to describe his work is that he is able to find the "soul" of his subject. Color, light, line and elements of size and spatial relation are utilized to communicate so much more than the most realistically accurate renditions ever could!

He will be showing works in various mediums including watercolor, pen and ink, colored pencil, and acrylic. Most recently, David has been creating three-dimensional pieces using wood. He will be showing an example of this medium as well. David also enjoys doing commissioned pieces, including greeting card design and logo design.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring works by three Flathead Valley fiber artists during the month of September. Carole Moseley, Sally Kimmel Glutting and Becky Pallies-Jacobsen will have a group show of a range of their fiber art including art quilts.

Carole learned to sew as a teenager from her Mother, an expert seamstress. She originally started traditional quilting which then led her to discover the wonderful world of art quilts. She was overwhelmed and soon became hooked on the textures, shapes and color that could be achieved through the use of many different materials, dyes, paints, threads, and surface stitching that create new dimensions in art. Trying her hand at every form of textile art and surface design led her on an exciting adventure and has provided her with the life-long learning process associated with all artistry.

Sally’s adventures as a Quilt Artist began more than 25 years ago when her children were babies. She loved the traditional designs with piecing, appliqué and the quilting then, and her art continues to reflect her mastery of these skills while expressing an ongoing appreciation of nature as well as the importance of expressing beliefs using fabric, design, color, and texture. Taking big pieces of fabric and cutting them into little pieces to create something new is always starts an exciting adventure for Sally. She skillfully combines quilting tradition with an extensive contemporary palette of fibers, photographs, paint, beads and designs from nature to create both large and small fascinating art quilts, each with its own charm and character.

Becky began her textile adventure many years ago in garment construction, evolving into quilt creation and fiber exploration. On her journey she collected fabrics, textures, fibers and beads that eventually began to combine the beauty of tradition with her unique flair for the obscure. Each piece she creates is like a pearl in the sense that it has been years in the making with collections of fabric scraps, pieces of thread, and broken beads one day manifesting into a single work of art. She builds her pieces around color and texture... Color speaks to the soul, while texture holds the movement and tells each fibers story.

Artist Biography - Cortni Janelle King

Encouraged and inspired by her family Cortni King started her endeavor to communicate visually at the ripe age of four, some say even earlier if you include avante garde expressionism in split peas and squash. This innate drive to create continued to inspire her throughout her educational career receiving her BFA from Arizona State University in 1993. She then vacillated between accepting a position as a high school art educator in Yuma, Arizona or to continue on at ASU for a masters degree in sculpture. She opted to take the teaching position and began working on her masters in secondary education with an emphasis in art through Northern Arizona University, which she completed in 1996 while teaching art and ceramics at Vista High School. Continuing her passion for the arts and arts education Cortni became an active member of the Arizona Art Education Association, even winning an award as secondary art teacher of the year in 2000, and started teaching evening art history courses for the local community college in addition to her daytime duties as a high school art specialist. All of this did not impede her desire to continue to create, show and sell her own work. In 2005, along with a group of other local artists, she began an artist cooperative establishing collaboration with the municipal art center for space and advertising. In addition to her involvement with the artist co-op, Cortni also showed her work in a variety of juried exhibitions throughout the state, bid private commissions and completed collaborative public art pieces for the municipality of Yuma. In 2008, after a twenty plus year hiatus, Cortni made the leap of faith to leave Arizona and return to Flathead where she and her extended family hail from. Cortni is one of those oddities that can claim both maternal and paternal roots in the valley dating back to the turn of the century. In Arizona she left behind a vibrant artist community, several public art works as well as large scale private murals, and throngs of students inspired by her passion. Cortni currently lives and works in West Glacier, which she loves, and although inspired by the beauty of the place she lives you will not find an elk among her subjects. She loves the patina of aged metals, weathered wood and worked canvas and often incorporates these surfaces into her work. Although she loves color and the tactile experience of the brush, she also loves to construct and often incorporates the two into her non-traditional wall pieces. As a privately commissioned muralist, Cortni specializes in children’s murals creating inviting, vibrant spaces for youth, quite different from her studio
work.

Pam Houston - August - The Purple Pomegranate

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Ulm painter, Pam Houston during the month of August. Houston, a native Montanan, paints her world with transparent watercolor and oils and acrylics. Interested in the creative arts from an early age, she honed her skills in a wide variety of mediums at the Kansas City Art Institute. For seven years Pam threw pots as a trade, but gave up the clay and wheel for the paintbrush.

Since then, Pam has experimented with watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and oils. "I really like to draw; I hope that my love of drawing shows up in my paintings. Usually the subject itself dictates the medium. Oil is easier to use outside, gives me more time, and I can get some nice textures with it." Currently I am having a lot of fun with acrylics. Drawing from her experiences living and growing up in Montana, Pam's paintings celebrate her passions, lifestyle, and environment. Pam says “I like to paint people, people doing things, working and playing.”

Pam lives with her husband on the Missouri River near Ulm, MT, a small farming community next to Great Falls. Here, they enjoy canoeing, gardening, hunting, and fishing. Between the beautiful location on the river and the amount of outdoor activity available just outside the front door, Pam is never without subject matter.

Bird's Eye View at Stumptown Art Studio from Aug 5 - Sept 1

Stumptown Art Studio is featuring artists Carolyn Churchouse and Kristie Caratelli in Bird's Eye View, a collaborative show of their work. Opening reception is on August 5 during the regular First Thursday Gallery Nights from 6-9 p.m. Bird's Eye View is on display through September 1, 2010.

Carolyn Churchouse, primarily a clay artist, combines some of her work for this show with other materials to create, unusual, whimsical pieces. She draws on past times in her life for inspiration, and this time, is traveling back to 1972. That year was a turning point in her life that took her from childhood dreams to adult realities and to the realization that music would be her muse. Her pieces have a free-flowing rhythm.

Trees, funny ladies and of course birds have found their way onto Krisitie Caratelli's canvas once again. She finds liberation in not being confined to one medium when working and uses text mixed with found objects, paint and recycled paper. Inspiration for this show came from a feeling of transformation when birds take flight.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Thompson Falls painter, R. Wade Nelson during the month of July. Nelson, a retired high school art teacher is working to become a painter. He has been retired almost 2 years and his work is taking an interesting direction. His paintings in the series, Sunday in the Park, are all painted with acrylic latex on post-consumer paper and cardboard (house paint on recycled paper and cardboard).

Sunday in the Park series was inspired by a drive through Glacier National Park late last summer. Considered by many to be the “crown jewel” of the Park system, Wade feels we are lucky to call it “our back yard”. Wade has tried through this series to present an object and image that is at once sacred and profane. He tries to honor the value placed on the park while working in a direct fashion with humble material. Wade feels that there are common threads between the extraordinary and the ordinary. He works in a way to capture an impression of place, time and atmosphere. He wants the viewer to share the experience with him of a Sunday in the park.

Station 8 is very pleased to host Whitefish native, Tayler Johnson, as their featured artist for the month of July. You will be surprised by Tayler's work, simply because the level expertise and variety ,of both subject and medium, contrasts sharply with her age! Tayler, a recent graduate of Whitefish High School, describes herself as "passionate about art" and that is putting it mildly. From her earliest memories, she has been responding to the beauty of the Flathead Valley through drawing and painting. She enjoys all aspects of working with the mediums oil, acrylic, watercolor and gauche, her favorite being oil. When she is not painting or drawing, she spends her time partaking in a wide variety of outdoor activities, including camping, rock climbing, swimming, fishing, slack lining, folfing golfing, hiking and water skiing. Having recently earned her scuba diving certification, Tayler has added exploring underwater environments to her list of activities. It is highly likely that this new direction will influence her art as well.
Tayler will be attending FVCC in the Fall as her first step towards expanding her artistic abilities and subsequent career options. In a year or two, she plans to attend an accredited art school with her goal being to explore the world of graphic design. She is committed to developing her acquired skills into a career she will love for the rest of her life.

"Art is all about making connections. When we learn, our synaptic nerves make connections in our brains that never existed before. Likewise, art can connect two or more completely different ideas, thoughts or emotions and create something new. This new creation can be beautiful, terrifying, breathtaking, haunting, humorous, confusing, enlightening and hopefully memorable.
When I create, my goal is to bridge a connection from the artist to the viewer; to give the viewer a glimpse into my window of the world. I use a variety of mediums in my quest towards connectivity. Sometimes I will stick to one medium, but many times I need to combine paint with ink and pencil to fulfill my artistic vision. Regardless of the medium, when I create I tie together different themes, shapes, emotions or colors. The resulting tapestry weaves disparate elements together revealing a new truth.
Although the mediums and subjects of my art vary, the whole of my work remains stylistically similar and all of my work strives to make connections. My paintings incorporate elements of figurative, landscape, abstract, surreal and expressionistic styles. I weave together styles in order to forge new connections. In my photography, I try to hold a mirror to nature. By duplicating and flipping images, inanimate objects become something far more magical. They take on animal characteristics that appear both familiar and alien.
Regardless of medium or subject, I am always grasping for new connections. I am fascinated by the process of creation in both the natural and the artistic worlds and I want my art to bridge a connection between myself and the audience." Victor Daniel

Calligraphic Arts/Watercolor Painting

If a picture paints a thousand words, then Gini Ogle takes that simple truth a step further with her artistry by combining her long time interest in calligraphic arts with her new found interest in watercolor painting. Creative letter arts has been Gini’s focus for thirty plus years. Her evolutionary career in this medium has spanned work in graphic design, teaching, commissions, and gallery ownership. Her newfound interest in watercolor painting has provided the range she needed to fully explore her artistic abilities, dovetailing the written message, alphabet design, and the painting into one seamless artistic expression in many cases. Gini also enjoys each of these disciplines separately. She has many watercolor paintings that speak more clearly than words ever could of the beauty she has been witness to as a fourth generation Montanan.

The most notable aspect of Gini’s watercolors is that they reflect a response that is purely intuitive. One gets the feeling that she utilizes all her senses, opening her heart to the subject and allowing that to influence the painting. In so doing, she makes the invisible parts of her experience visible. Utilizing calligraphy in some of her watercolors puts a voice to that experience. This is her signature.

During the course of her calligraphic career, Gini enjoyed several opportunities to redefine the venues for hand lettering. Collaborating with a photographer, Gini helped design a Lewis and Clark Bicentennial project. Designing and carving custom “phrase doors” was the result of another collaborative effort between Gini and a door artisan.

Recognition of Gini’s contribution as an artist include a national juried acceptance at MIT into a calligraphy class taught by Herman Zapf of Germany, and winning entries in the National Postal Museum contest. In addition, Gini was one of twelve artists selected to study in England with three renowned calligraphy authors and instructors. Publishing credits include entries in “Speedball” Instruction Book, “Letter Arts Review” magazine, and the “Alphabetica” collection.

Gini’s work is currently being shown at the Hockaday Museum of Art. She will be participating in the Plein Air Paint-Out in Glacier National Park later in June. Until then, she can be found at work in her studio at 530 4th Street East in Kalispell.

In the heart of Whitefish is the non-profit community art center Stumptown Art Studio. It was founded in 1995 to offer art opportunities for all ages and art interests including: classes, workshops, camps, art parties, an artists' co-operative, painting pottery and glass fusing in the Ceramics Annex, art gifts, retail art supplies and exhibits.

Exhibits hosted at Stumptown Art Studio feature guest artists, group displays, student work, new works and provide exhibition space for emerging artists. The public is invited to stop by and enjoy this year's 2010 First Thursday Gallery Nights season between 6 and 9 p.m. during the opening receptions or for a month following anytime during regular open hours.

Stumptown Art Studio is hosting one of its most popular exhibits--the 15th Annual Spring Show of Student Artwork and Ice Cream Social on Thursday, June 3 during “First Thursday Gallery Nights”. From 6-9 p.m. gallery goers will be able to see an exhibition of works by their favorite, young neighborhood artists. The pieces on display are a culmination from Stumptown Art Studio’s youth classes since last fall. Over 100 works of student art will be on display through June 29. They include drawings and paintings, collage and printmaking, pottery and sculpture.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Lakeside painter, Sarah McConnell during the month of June. A third-generation Montanan, Sarah McConnell has been an artist and teacher for over a decade. Her work is sold in many galleries throughout the United States. She is the author of One Big Beautiful Bead, which was published by Lark Books in 2007. She paints portraits and makes jewelry in Lakeside, Montana, where she lives with her husband and two daughters.

Sarah talks about her work, “I paint children because they're beautiful - their eyes are bright, their skin is fresh - you can't really go wrong with such a great subject. There's infinite variety and I never get bored or run out of subject matter. I paint in mixed media - watercolor, acrylic, oil, collage - whatever seems to suit the subject best. By necessity (children are not famous for being able to sit still for a long time) I paint from photo references. I take lots of pictures, outside if possible. I'm striving to make my current work more painterly - my natural tendency is to be super-realistic and keep working until you can hardly tell the painting isn't a photo. My goal is to capture not just the likeness, but the moment in time. If you could put a summer afternoon in a bottle and take it out on a dull midwinter day - that is how I would like you to feel with one of my paintings.”

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Alaska artist Kay Petal during the month of May. Kay is a sculptural needle felt artist originally from Wasilla, Alaska. She was working out of her home studio, overlooking a scenic Alaskan lake, but her Felt Alive Studio is now on the road. She and her husband have left Alaska in their RV on an indefinite teaching tour.

With just a single barbed felting needle borrowed from industry; lofty, lustrous wool tangles into solid felt creations bound only by one's imagination. Wool is an amazing sculpture medium with endless possibilities. Kay's focus is on dolls. Her dolls are 100% needle felted wool batting made without using any patterns or a single sewing stitch; just thousand of pokes with her felting needle. Kay uses various colors of dyed wool almost like paint as she adds the details. They are quite flexible and have a very unusual lifelike quality to them that Kay contributes to the living qualities of the wool.

The first Whitefish Gallery Nights is Thursday, May 6th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Kay will be teaching needle felting classes at Camas Creek Yarns in Kalispell, May 14-16. Spaces are still available. For more information regarding classes, please contact Camas Creek Yarn.

The arrival of Spring is celebrated through the work of Lavonne Burgard. Her use of color, and the freedom reflected in her brush strokes, gives the viewer the feeling of standing in front of an open window, surrounded by fresh air and bright skies.

Growing up on a farm in Iowa, Lavonne has called Montana home since 1975. Over the past 31 years, she has taught high school Art in Iowa, Arizona, South Dakota, Australia, and most recently in Kalispell.

Lavonne has left her teaching career behind, but, in so doing, has gained a new perspective which is reflected in her work. Retirement has opened her eyes to the expansiveness of life, and the limitless possibilities it holds. No longer bogged down by the details associated with her former responsibilities, her outlook is larger, and her sense of freedom expanded. A bright future is there for the taking, and Lavonne's large acrylics on canvas surely capture that attitude.

As both an artist and educator, Lavonne's work has been duly recognized. The Montana Arts Education Association selected Lavonne as recipient of the Montana Arts Educator of the Year in 2006. A one artist showing of her work, which included sixteen acrylic paintings of trees, took place at the Sage Spa. In addition, her work has been shown in the Hockaday Museum of the Arts for past and present membership, most recently as a participant in their minatures auction showing. Currently, her work is on display at the Montana Frameworks in downtown Kalispell and the Three Forks Grille in Columbia Falls.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Kalispell fiber artist Ruth Lane during the month of October. When Ruth discovered felting, she finally found the creative outlet for which she had been searching. As a self taught fiber artist, the versatility of fiber allows Ruth to “play” with a wide variety of materials including wool, silk, fabrics, yarns and threads. Creating one of a kind fiber art pieces to share with the world fulfills her creative passion.

One technique that Ruth especially enjoys is the ancient technique of felt making. Traditionally to make felt, raw or dyed wool was dampened with soapy water and agitated (usually by stomping or rolling) to “felt” the wool. She uses this traditional method of wet felting as well as dry felting with needles, either by hand or machine. Ruth then embellishes the felt with free motion machine embroidery, hand stitching and other techniques to develop a unique design.

As Ruth continues her journey into fiber art, she is learning to look at the world more clearly and closely. She is inspired by the beauty of the natural world, be it an “ordinary” piece of grass, a tiny bit of lichen or the gorgeous Montana landscapes. When you look at her work, Ruth wants you to be drawn into the layers and details of the rich, textural surface and to “feel” the joy of its creation.

Whitefish Goldsmiths is featuring Flowers, Faces and Friends by artist Jane Kleinschmidt. Jane's latest art project is the Northwest Montana Humane Society calender for 2010. Jane drew from many pets residing at the Humane Society. Camera for reference photos in hand, Jane spent time in the rooms where the pets lived. One day in the cat room, she had several loving cats giving all their attention to her. She would have loved to take them all home they were so sweet. Jane's cat Jose is a lifelong companion adopted from the Humane Society. Jane rendered the pets in pastel on sanded paper, a wonderful medium for capturing the expressions of the animals. Pastel and oil paintings of people, wildlife and flowers inspired by summer high country hikes are hanging for this evening of art wine and tasty appetizers. If you are not able to attend September 3rd's Gallery Night, Jane's artwork will be on display throughout the month.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Columbia Falls metal artist John Rose during the month of September. John has been working with various types of metal since his teens and has many years experience as a fabricator/welder. Throughout his years of employment, he was always creating designs from scrap metal and selling those pieces as a hobby. When unable to find a job after moving to the area in 2001, John started making and selling his artwork at area farmers markets as well as doing custom orders.

John enjoys the outdoors, drawing inspiration from his surroundings to create wildlife in whimsical and traditional designs in heated copper. He starts with mostly reclaimed material, creating a variety of unique handcrafted designs that include jewelry, ornaments, garden art and wall art. By cutting the copper sheet, hammering by hand for texture and shape then heating each piece to various temperatures, his technique achieves unique colors that are individual to only that piece. John enjoys working with his hands and looks forward to each day in his workshop.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Kalispell potter Sherry Wells during the month of August. Sherry’s studio, Free Flight Studio, is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains close to Glacier National Park. She has been working with clay for over 30 years and has a degree in art education. Sherry has taught classes to all ages. Her goal is for folks to transform their kitchens and household items used in day to day life into works of art. They then can take a moment out of their day to stop, interact, touch, enjoy, and appreciate a piece of art made by someones hands. They can stop to appreciate art at unexpected moments throughout the day to hopefully enhance and improve their day and possibly even their outlook.

Sherry’s pieces are individually thrown on a potter's wheel and/or hand built using white stoneware or porcelain. Most are a combination of wheel thrown work that has then been altered. Nothing is wasted, all clay is recycled, what does not get fired becomes another piece. The pieces not meeting selling standards can be found as garden art, mosaics & stepping stones around her studio grounds. All work is fired to 2400 degrees F and is oven, dishwasher & microwave safe, except Raku which is intended for decorative purposes only. The work on display will be from Sherry’s two most recent wood firings.

Stephen Isley Jewelry, 241 Central Avenue, will feature the work of Whitefish artists Scott and Kerry Nagel for the month of July. Opening reception will be Thursday, July 2, during the Whitefish Gallery Nights celebration. The Nagels, founders and previous owners of Wasabi Sushi Bar, have been spending long hours in their studios, creating three-dimensional art. Scott’s medium is wood, with emphasis on whimsical boxes. Kerry works with paper, building art pieces that are organic in nature and influenced by abstract sculpture, ceramics and basketry.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Butte painter Sallie Bowen during the month of July. Sallie has been painting for most of her life. Subject matter comes from her own experiences, travel, sketches, and recollections. Many of the paintings evolve and go through many changes. At times the transformation is a slow process, and at others, can marvelously "flow" from one stage to another with little effort. She is always surprised that something- the visual imagery- can come from "nothing", or no preconceived idea. Oftentimes, color is arbitrary, giving the work a more personal touch. Shapes come out of negative spaces and these "found shapes" must work with the "internal logic" of the paintings.

Sallie feels that to participate in art is to celebrate life. “Our short existence on this earth demands that we give full attention. Being an artist is both an honor and a responsibility to spend time wisely in producing the best work."

Stephen Licence is best known for his large acrylic on canvas paintings. His bold and striking style is evidence of his unique color pallet and sense of composition. He received his art education at the New York State University at New Paltz, the New York Institute of Technology, the San Francisco Art Institute and an independent study program in Europe through the New York Institute of Technology. He is an award-winning artist most recently garnering the coveted "Best of Show" ribbon at the Southwest Arts Festival.

His art conveys the simplicity and spirit of the West through primitive and contemporary interpretation. Images, patterns and symbols reminiscent of ancient cultures are infused and transformed into art that is new and fresh, yet somehow familiar and timeless.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Finley Point ceramic artist Mimi Werner during the month of June. Mimi’s new work takes on two divergent paths. In the 30 years Mimi has worked as a ceramic artist, she has primarily focused on high fired, functional porcelain wares. Due partly to economic times and the ecological crisis facing the planet Mimi is experimenting with electric fired porcelain using discarded auto parts to stamp relief into functional plates and baking dishes.

The covered vessels in this show are a theme that Mimi keeps returning to in her work. These pieces are fired in a kiln using wood as fuel. The mark of the flame is left directly on the clay. By using copper wire, masking tape and other combustibles, unpredictable, smoky patterns are burned onto the clay. These pieces reflect Mimi's continued fascination with the chemistry of flame and clay as well as the ritualized act of incorporating these pieces into our daily lives.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Olney watercolor artist Sue Beardsley during the month of May. Sue feels that art, like life, is a journey, each following a path which she calls the creative process of discovery, exploration and choice. Sue chose watercolor as a medium for painting because it offers her the best opportunity to experience the complete process.

Sue has recently expanded her work into watercolor montage and collage which she especially enjoys because it creates an opportunity for visual impact with the element of shadow added to the versatility of the medium. Sue chooses to apply the montage and collage to still life paintings because of the varied approach that she can use. The use of watercolor allows maximum fluidity but at the same time can be explicitly controlled. Sue achieves the most visual impact by choosing to use all the characteristics that the medium allows.

Meet Sue during Whitefish Gallery Night, Thursday, May 7, 2009 from 6-9 PM. Sue’s work will be displayed during the opening and throughout the month of May.

Karen Leigh - October - The Purple Pomegranate

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Kalispell artist Karen Leigh during the month of October. Inspired primarily by the beauty and spirit of her native Montana as well as travels abroad, Leigh offers original watercolors and commissioned work. Karen states, “Always on the lookout for ‘accidental magnificence’, I am particularly interested in finding beauty in unexpected places and in painting the more intimate details of life around me.”

Karen is a fourth-generation Montanan who has lived in the Flathead Valley since 1970. A graduate of Montana State University, her primary interest has been transparent watercolor. Figures and portraits have recently become important subjects in her work. A full-time painter and signature member of the Montana Watercolor Society, she maintains a studio in the newly renovated Eastside Brick, formerly the local hospital. She also teaches privately and accepts commissions.

September - Marie Brittsan - The Purple Pomegranate

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Whitefish artist Marie Brittsan during the month of September. Marie’s bold, expressionistic artwork celebrates life and lifts the spirit. A former watercolorist, Marie uses layers of transparent acrylic glazes and applied texture to bring depth and intensity to her subjects. From abstract to representational, her colorful acrylic paintings carry energy and emotion.

Born and raised by the oceans and canyons in southern California, Marie developed a great love for the natural beauty surrounding her. She has painted since she was a child and the passion for painting has never faded. Marie speaks about her work, “When I am painting, my eyes become open again to the beauty around me. Color, light, shadow, form and energy are everywhere we look, always inspiring creative declaration. Music, emotion and Spirit have color, and I endeavor to capture those expressions in what I paint.”

Samarah Fine Art is proud to introduce new and original artwork by Chad Poppleton, Rusti Warner and Rolf Zillmer at their September show. Their pieces will be on display at Samarah throughout the month of September and a celebratory opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 4^th from 6:00PM – 9:00PM, as part of the 2008 Whitefish Gallery Nights. All are welcome to stop by and enjoy a memorable evening of wine and hors d’oeuvres by Ali Caters.

“Chad, Rusti and Rolf have been friends of the gallery for many years. Each of them has a unique style and voice as artists, so this show is a time for us to honor them and to showcase their talent.” Stated Rob Stern, Gallery Owner.

Chad Poppleton is a resident of Cache Valley, Utah, where his interest in art began at an early age. As a child, Chad spent most of his time at his family’s ranch where he was able to study and observe wildlife first hand. His respect for and affinity with nature has had the greatest creative influence on his artwork, and has made his paintings a true refection of his love for animals and the outdoors. Chad’s ability, not only to represent his subjects accurately, but to also capture their character, is what distinguishes Chad as a significant wildlife artist in his own right.

Rusti Warner is a Montana artist who grew up in Havre near several Indian reservations. Her time and friendship with those in the Native American community gave Rusti firsthand insights into the modern American Indian life. It was from this experience that Rusti’s interest in portraiture, artistic anatomy and oil painting began. Today, Rusti’s signature use of tonality infuses her paintings with a moody quality that makes her artwork so movingly sublime and peaceful.

Rolf Zillmer currently lives in Libby, Montana, and comes from a family of fellow artists. After spending the greater part of his life working in the arts, Rolf received an opportunity to photo-illustrate America’s national parks. This exposure to natural beauty refueled Rolf’s passion for painting and shifted his focus exclusively to fine art. Today, living in Montana, with its endless supply of reference material, has given Rolf the ability to develop and sharpen his skill as an acclaimed landscape painter.

August - Dixie Wajdic - The Purple Pomegranate

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Lakeside artist Dixie Wajdic during the month of July. Dixie uses the beauty of the Flathead Valley's lakes and mountains to help inspire her to create products which preserve the history of the Old West and Montana's Heritage. These items make great gifts for those who have a home with rustic decor, for those who love the outdoors and for the people who have everything.

The Boundry Line, Dixie’s company, specializes in creating one-of-a-kind wood items using the natural beauty of old juniper and cedar fence posts that have since been replaced. She creates vases, oil lamps, votive candle holders and lamps. Each piece is unique and some even still have moss growing on them. Dixie’s use of old fence posts is certainly a “green” way to create a beautiful work of art that is functional and eye catching.

Dixie’s work will be featured for the full month of July and on Gallery Nights which is August 7, 2008 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

All are welcome to stop by and enjoy a memorable evening of wine and hors d’oeuvres by Ali Caters.

This will mark an especially exciting occasion for Samarah, as it will feature pieces from both new artists to the gallery, and from those who have been cornerstones of Samarah's repertoire of western artists for many years.

“Harry Koyama and Charles Davis have been part of the Samarah Fine Art family since 2004,” stated gallery owner Rob Stern. “I have seen Harry’s paintings, with their bold color palette and impressionistic style, continually grow in acclaim and popularity, and the subtle elegance of Charles’ pottery become renowned throughout the state. To witness that kind of momentum and success in two of our artists is a truly exciting thing to see.”

For expressionist oil painter Trent Gudmundsen, this will be his first show with the gallery. Trent’s signature pieces are compelling interior landscapes and romantic portraiture that marry what he feels with the realism in what his sees. The show will highlight some of his latest pieces and will introduce Trent as a new and welcome addition to Samarah’s portfolio of artists.

July - The Purple Pomegranate - Elaine Gutierrez

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Whitefish artist Elaine Gutierrez during the month of July. Elaine started sewing 18 years ago when her husband bought her a sewing machine to repair a pair of his jeans. She has since developed many techniques in her exploration of fabric, textiles and fiber art.
As a self taught artist, Elaine uses a mix of appliqué, collage and free motion machine embroidery to create one-of-a-kind wall hangings. Inspired by the natural surroundings of her small ranch north of Whitefish, she often uses her own photographs for themes in her work. Elaine designs outdoor scenes; cutting small pieces of colorful fabric and appliquéing them to develop an intricate landscape. She dyes many of her background fabrics by hand and her palette ranges from earthy to vivid. She is currently moving into a new studio and is looking forward to having her own space to create her fabric collages.

Samarah Fine Art's Three Visions of the West Show

Samarah Fine Art will introduce new artwork by acclaimed western artists Rob Stern, Tara Moore

and Robert Krogle for their July show. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, July 3^rd from 6:00PM – 9:00PM as part of the 2008 Whitefish Gallery Nights. Additionally, the gallery will host an onsite painting demonstration by Coeur D’Alene artist Robert Krogle, from 10:00AM – 2:00PM that same day.

Samarah’s “Three Visions of the West” show highlights Stern, Moore and Krogle’s different interpretations of the west’s romance and mystique in their theme and composition. Yet despite their varying executions of the same subject matter, all three exemplify a commonality in their inherit interest and admiration of the cowboy genre. It is this identification with western art that allows all three artists to effectively reach the viewer on an emotional level with their powerful and compelling imagery – making this a truly memorable show.

Samarah Fine Art Celebrates the Artwork of Nicholas Oberling and Jennifer Li

Samarah Fine Art is pleased to announce that they will feature the artwork of husband and wife artists Nicholas Oberling and Jennifer Li throughout the month of June. The gallery will honor these two artists during an opening reception, which will take place on Thursday, June 5^th from 6:00PM – 9:00PM as part of the Whitefish Gallery Nights.

Nicholas Oberling has been a cornerstone Montana Landscape painter in the gallery for several years. With this event, Samarah will showcase many of Nicholas’ latest works, many of which celebrate Montana’s endless natural beauty (see image below).

Nicholas Oberling is a nationally represented artist, but has poured much of his energy and focus into fostering the Flathead Valley’s ever growing art scene. Such efforts include his work as a founding member of the Montana Painters Alliance, his organization and conception of the Big Hole River in Paint fundraiser and his time as an active board member for the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell.

This will be the first time that Samarah Fine Art has had the opportunity to feature the evocative artwork of oil painter Jennifer Li. With a technique inspired by the Dutch Golden Age, Jennifer brings a touch of naturalism into her subjects, giving her pieces a modern and fresh quality that sets them apart from traditional genre paintings (see image below).

Like her husband, Jennifer has been represented in galleries nationwide. The two have been based in Montana for 10 years and currently reside in Kalispell.

Samarah Fine Art will kick off this year’s Whitefish Gallery Nights by hosting its annual “Local Artist Invitational”. This memorable evening is inspired by the incredible artists who are living and producing artwork right here in the community. Featured artists will include Nicholas Oberling, Elizabeth Michelsen-Jonas, Paula Humphreys, Rob Stern, Robert Marceau, Tara Moore, Treg Miller and Charles Davis, to name a few.

“Samarah Fine Art is fortunate to work with some of the area’s most prominent and emerging artists. This show is about honoring their talent and serves as a “thank you” for continuing to amaze us with their truly inspired and beautiful pieces,” stated gallery owner Rob Stern.
